The Federal Government yesterday filed a six-count corruption charge against a former Governor of Niger State, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, and his ex- Chief of Staff, Umar Mohammed Nasko before a High Court of Niger State, sitting in Minna.
In the charge, the defendants were alleged to have, between 2005 and 2007, conspired between themselves to commit an illegal act to wit criminal breach of trust and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code.
Aliyu was accused of dishonestly converting the sum of N520,348,000 belonging to Niger State which was withdrawn from Niger State Government House Security Account number 101242374 domiciled with a bank into his own and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 315 of the Penal Code. In addition, the former governor was accused of converting N1,725,837,000 belonging to Niger State into his own use.
The said money was alleged to have been withdrawn from the Niger State Government House Security Account number 1012424374 domiciled with a bank. Aliyu and Nasco are also charged to have jointly converted to their use N1,090,000,000 which formed part of the proceeds of the sale of 16 per cent shares of Niger State in North South Power Company Limited.
