Buhari accepts Aisha Alhassan’s resignation as Women Affairs Minister

President Muhammadu Buhari has accepted the resignation of Senator Aisha Jummai Alhassan (Mrs) as Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development from the government with immediate effect.

In a letter signed by him today, Sunday, President Buhari said, “I have received your letter offering your resignation as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I accept your resignation with immediate effect.

“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I thank you for your past services to the nation.”

The president, according to a statement by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, has directed that the work of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development be looked after by Hajiya Aisha Abubakar, the Minister of State, Industry, Trade and Investment. This, also, is with immediate effect.

Alhassan resigned over the decision of the All Progressives Congress to screen her out of the Taraba gubernatorial race. She had since left the party and joined the United Democratic Party, UDP.

The former minister was screened out over her expressed loyalty to former vice president and leading presidential aspirant in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar.
